Paul, aged 15, was excluded from school after a fight involving several other boys, but his exclusion was overturned when an independent panel found that he had not been the main culprit. However, Paul’s teachers refused to teach him when he returned to school, and he worked alone under the supervision of a retired teacher. He was allowed no contact with other students.
Paul’s father claimed that his son had been "denied a proper education" by being treated in this way. A court, however, decided that these arrangements were not unreasonable, and dismissed the case.
