Brief Case : being detained

unreasonable force?

Police went to a house in London after receiving reports that a naked man was causing a disturbance by banging on a front door, which later proved to be his own.

The man, who had a history of mental health problems, was arrested and taken in a police van to hospital. Throughout this period he was kept under restraint by up to eight police officers. 20 minutes after reaching the hospital, whilst allegedly being restrained by the police, the man lost conscientiousness and fell into a coma. Eight days later, he died.

At the inquest into the death, the jury decided that police officers had held the sick man in a restraint position for too long and that an unreasonable amount of force was used.
