The job of investigating a crime and charging a suspect is done by the police,
but the decision as to whether to continue with the case and bring it to
court is made by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Most of the information that the police receive comes from the general public. Without this help they could do very little. The courts too rely on help from the public as witnesses and members of juries.
